PoiVision DeVision: entertainment for the mind, body, and soul...

SplatterTribe: Introduce and compare yourself to something that comes in liquid form and then explain why the comparison...

Angel Joiner: LSD, Because my life is a trip.

SplatterTribe: For anyone that has no idea who you may be or what Poi dancing may be, please enlighten them...

Angel Joiner: I am the founder of a poi group called the Poivision Division. Poi is a performance art where we incorporate dance with fire. We use different types of equipment in our fire dancing besides poi like hula hoops, fans, staff, devil sticks, and fire breathing.

SplatterTribe: What originally got you interested in Poi Dancing?

Angel Joiner:  I saw a fire dancing show at the Terrapin Hill Harvest Festival several years ago. I was completely mesmerized by the beauty of the people and their flawless control of the fire. I knew at that moment I wanted to learn, the problem was that I didn't know anyone who even knew what it was. So I taught myself by watching YouTube videos.

SplatterTribe: How many people are involved with your group?

Angel Joiner: It varies from show to show...sometimes more sometimes less. Me, Sean (Sluder), and Amy (Palumbo) are the permanent members, we bring in different people for different things. for example, our usual hula-hooper chick was at Burning Man (during our) last performance, so we brought in Josie (Williams). when we perform at Terrapin, its usually the same people, but they all don't always make it, so we get others. I have a pretty big network of fire spinners. The video I'm sending you and the pics are the same 8 of us.

SplatterTribe: What goes through your mind during a dance?
Angel Joiner: 1..2..3..4..1..2..3..4

SplatterTribe: Do you ever burn yourself?

Angel Joiner: No, I haven't yet (knock on wood) but I have seen it happen to others before, usually its clothing that catches on fire, especially if you wear synthetics. I once saw a guy's pants catch on fire, so he dropped them and ran away (with no underwear, of course).

SplatterTribe: Tell us something about the history of Poi Dancing that we are surely not aware of...
Angel Joiner: Poi was created by the Maori Tribe of New Zealand. The word poi means "ball" on a cord. The women originally used it to keep their hands flexible for weaving and the men used it for strength and coordination required during battle. Nowadays the Maori perform poi dances for tourist.

SplatterTribe: Define these words as they pertain to you...

Angel Joiner:

Music- necessary
Entertainment- escape
Art- expression
Life- spiritual journey

SplatterTribe: Finish the following sentences for me.

Angel Joiner:

If you don't like me you can...get to know me.
I cannot stand...bottle rockets
There's nothing cooler than...Spending time with family and friends.
What in the...hell is that their calling music these days?
I wish I was...a mind reader.
I should have listened when...the voices in my head spoke.
I always knew...I would love bieng a mother.
What if...we all got along?

SplatterTribe: If you had to compare Poi dancing to a feeling what would it be and explain.

Angel Joiner: There are several feelings going on, excitement, fear, love, sexy. You feel this energy from the crowd and the beating of the drums. You feel the heat of your flame and when you spin with someone else you have to feel each others presence. Whatever the feeling, it's addictive.

SplatterTribe: What comes to mind when you hear the word SplatterTribe?

Angel Joiner: Taking different tribes of people and splattering them together to make one whole tribe.

SplatterTribe: Is it possible that I could get legitimately hypnotized by watching fire twirl and spin around?

Angel Joiner: mesmerized not hypnotized.

SplatterTribe: If someone was going to make a collectible poi-toy of you, would you want it to be Barbie Doll Style, Voodoo Doll Style, Porcelain Doll Style, Raggedy Anne Style, Blow Up Doll Style or Collectors Statue Style? Also what would it be wearing and what accessories would come with it?

Angel Joiner: blow-up doll because I like making peoples fantasies come true.
I would be wearing nothing.

SplatterTribe: Do you believe........

Angel Joiner:

in ghost? yes.
in UFO's? never seen one.
in conspiracy theories? duh! I lived through the bush administration.
in sasquatch? of course, don't you?
in zombies? yeah, I graduated from Central Hardin with a bunch of them.
that the world is ending in 2012? Not the end but a new beginning.
in 2nd chances? absolutely, everyone makes mistakes.
in miracles? yes, my daughter is one of them.
in magic? uh huh.
in karma? yep!
that we really landed on the moon? sure.
in reincarnation? yes.
that dreams mean something? no. I believe they are combination of things that have happened and thoughts.
in De Ja Vu? I feel like you've asked me this before.
in fate? yes.
in the butterfly effect? oh yeah.

SplatterTribe: I ask everyone I interview if they have a good random question to ask a future interviewee. So this question comes from Chromegirl and her question is...

What is your all time favorite sound?

Angel Joiner: My favorite sound is the flames whirling around me when I spin poi.

SplatterTribe: Do you have a good random question I can ask a future interviewee?

Angel Joiner: boxers or briefs?

SplatterTribe: Do you have a question you would like to ask me?

Angel Joiner: What made you want to start SplatterTribe? (Tribe Note: I will answer that soon!)

SplatterTribe: Do you look at the flame when you are dancing or do you look past the flame? Angel Joiner: Normally I don't look past it unless I'm doing a choreographed bit and I have to pay attention to the other person.

SplatterTribe: Songwriting time, I write 2 lines to a verse then you write 2 lines to a verse...
-I try to walk out of town, but my feet, they sink in the ground-
Angel Joiner: my ol' Kentucky home I'll stay, I will probably never get away.

SplatterTribe: Any closing comments concerning anything you want said, known, printed or shown...

Angel Joiner: Check out the Terrapin Hill festivals. This is where we perform and teach workshops, I also custom make practice and fire toys.
