Interview by Primal

Ok, so I have always had a dilemma when dealing with reviews. I mean the whole concept behind reviews has always been silly to me. It is simply one person expressing their over-rated opinion and they expect you to care. Most of the music that I have ever liked has been tore apart in reviews at one time or another. I mean, really, to not listen to something just because somebody said they didn’t like it is quite sheepish, isn’t it? Who really does that anyway, right?

The thing about music is, there is always someone out there that will like something. There’s music out there that I love, that people close to me cannot stand and vice versa. That being said, I simply never wanted to hate on something just because it wasn’t my style of music. Most of the time I would rather not even waste my time having to listen to it, to be honest with you…

So this brings me to a solution I came up with years ago. Instead of talking negative about music that someone out there has put their heart, soul and time into, instead of telling people not to give something a listen simply because I don’t like it, I came up with two solutions…

1.) I would only review stuff that I personally liked.

The problem I ran into here was, although my musical tastes are as diverse as they could possibly be, it’s not very often that I run into much new stuff that I actually like. I mean, good, bad, or indifferent, it is what it is, and that is how it is.

That brings me to option number…

2.) I would only say good things about the music.

No matter what I personally thought about it or how much it hurt to give it a listen, I would seek out the positives. Well, you can imagine how mentally painful that would be, even for the mentally impaired like me.

At the end of the day, neither of those ideas seemed to work very well. They wouldn’t promote diversity, or reality, so I just scrapped the idea of doing reviews altogether. The thing is though, whether you do reviews or not, when you run an active website, people still send music and assume you do. So after more thought I had an epiphany. What if I take one, single song from an artist and send it to several of my friends and have them review that song; one song, several reviews? To prevent any prejudice or distractions from the song, I send the song with no title information, no artist information, no anything, just the song. They play the song and write the first thing that comes to their mind whether good, bad, sarcastic or downright wretched! It's about honest and diverse opinions; random people hearing random songs. Besides, I figured with different people reviewing the same random song, we should indeed get some interesting opinions and diverse reviews.

So now, this is The Music Room and they are The Listeners. I want to stress though, that this is meant to basically be a column. This isn’t about telling you that you should or shouldn’t listen to the bands or artists. This isn’t about an artist being good or bad. This is just a few Listeners hearing a song and saying what they feel. It could be a style of music they don’t like. It could be a style they do. I will also post all the information you need to find out how you feel about these artists and songs for yourself at the bottom of this page.

BTW, I also decided to add yet another element for the artist that are interested in doing so. I'm going to allow the artist a chance to review The Listeners! What? Yup, you heard it right, the artist reviews the reviewer, or in this case, The Listener! This won't ALWAYS happen, of course, but for those that choose to do so, they will have that outlet for revenge!

Today we have 4 Listeners reviewing the Overthrone single 'Plague Of Greed' from their upcoming release 'Fall Of Liberty'.

Overthrone's Lead Guitarist and Vocalist Ryan Preston also chimes in to respond to The Listeners.

Listener 1:  The rhythm writers of this band have an extreme understanding of 80's technical thrash metal style. Actually, its pretty damn good. Imagine Forbidden and Testament having a big beer fueled man love session and spitting out a ".....and Justice for All' t-shirt wearing bastard. Much better than the onslaught of retro thrash groups that’s been popping up in the past few years. Got to say that the vocals started out terrific at the beginning, they are total Chuck Billy and James Hatfield worship. But at the 2:07 mark it takes a hit with a weak melodic vocal chorus. The only way I can describe it is as if an emo guy decided to sew his mangina up, put his penis back on, and try to sing. But the penis isn't healed all the way and the vocals just don't have the balls or control behind them. I'd without a doubt listen to more of this group while reflecting on the days of great thrash metal. 7 out 10 for this music style...

Ryan Preston: I think this guy gets what we were going for in this song, kind of a throwback to good thrash metal very influenced by bands like Testament. Our focus is strongly on guitar so yes vocals on some parts do suffer and lack the punch that they should have. Our Producer tried to make that singing chorus part sound a little different than the rest of the song to kind of break it up a little, I have had mixed reviews on this from good to bad. I think his remark about manginas and shit was kinda funny, maybe a little harsh since it sounds no where near as gay as a lot of singing I've heard from this emo genre. But yes it does lack the balls that it could have. He put a little too much thought into that comment if you ask me sounds like he knows a little too much of how a mangina works. But all in all I find it to be a great review and I take the criticism well, it only makes us stronger. So I thank you brother. 7/10 is a fair score. There will be more my friend!!!

Listener 2: I think this song is well put together. The guitar, drums, bass and vocals sound very tight and on point. Its not my musical taste whatsoever, but it sounds like a few bands I've heard other people rave about who are into this genre, so I assume its really good if this is your kind of music. The vocals, however, seem to be better suited to an older style of metal music than this...

Ryan Preston: It sounds like this reviewer doesn't have a extensive background in metal, but for someone who doesn't listen to this genre to say good things about it is a blessing I would say. I like the comment on how the vocals sounds better suited for an older style of metal, because that's kind of what we are going for. We are not huge fans of the vocal style of a lot of today's metal. Cookie monster need not sing metal. Thank you for your review.

Listener 3:  Like too many death/speed metal bands, there’s this foreboding societal message delivered in that plain package of hostility - all of which seems like posturing. One big pageantry of flustered angst. Don’t get me wrong, my favored genre of music is death metal, unfortunately all too few bands do it right. What I like to hear is the music. For me there has to be originality in lyrics and vocal execution otherwise I‘m distracted. Usually what I get is "roar, roar I’m a demon". And often it’s the same demon: some limp inflated guttural insincere imp. There are times I can ignore the vocals and it’s message and simply tear through the raging tsunami and love every minute of it, but these guys failed on all fronts to transport me into that kingdom of power. Instead it felt like opening a can of generic soda whose fizzle goes flat the moment the tab is popped...

Ryan Preston: This guy just didn't like it. I guess he is right on how we could have touched more on taking power back and all that but he had nothing to say about the music itself which is what we are all about. He must not listen to metal turned to 11, he probably listened to it on his laptop and could only hear the lyrics

(which I agree may not be the greatest) But I would have liked this guy to say something about the music. There is not much to say but sorry you didn't like it, the new Fall out Boy album should be coming out soon right? Thank you for your review.

Listener 4: This is very influenced by 80's Thrash Metal. Whether it is leftover's or a new beginning...who knows? I would have to hear more from the band. I don't care much for the mix, especially the vocal mix. I'm not sure what the issue is, it just seems off, but I presume this is a indie band that is doing what they can with what they can and that could be why the mix is a little bland at times. Actually though, if the mix was up to par, this could be pretty powerful stuff. Anybody that gets all excited when they hear the terms "The Big Four" or "Thrash Metal" would probably find some elements they like in this

Ryan Preston: This is exactly what I would expect from someone who hasn't heard our music or much of thrash metal period. This is the reaction to this song I was expecting. Making people want more. Yes we are an Indie band and had limited resources. That said the mix sounds great on some media players and not so great on others. It sounds like crap on my laptop and great in the car. I think it has to do with it not being mastered yet. The comment on the "Big Four" is a breath of fresh air. I got the chance to see the "Big Four" so we will take that as a big compliment. Stay tuned there will be more soon!
