Ok, so I have always had a dilemma when dealing with reviews. I mean the whole concept behind reviews has always been silly to me. It is simply one person expressing their over-rated opinion and they expect you to care. Most of the music that I have ever liked has been tore apart in reviews at one time or another. I mean, really, to not listen to something just because somebody said they didn’t like it is quite sheepish, isn’t it? Who really does that anyway, right?
The thing about music is, there is always someone out there that will like something. There’s music out there that I love, that people close to me cannot stand and vice versa. That being said, I simply never wanted to hate on something just because it wasn’t my style of music. Most of the time I would rather not even waste my time having to listen to it, to be honest with you…
So this brings me to a solution I came up with years ago. Instead of talking negative about music that someone out there has put their heart, soul and time into, instead of telling people not to give something a listen simply because I don’t like it, I came up with two solutions…
1.) I would only review stuff that I personally liked.
The problem I ran into here was, although my musical tastes are as diverse as they could possibly be, it’s not very often that I run into much new stuff that I actually like. I mean, good, bad, or indifferent, it is what it is, and that is how it is.
That brings me to option number…
2.) I would only say good things about the music.
No matter what I personally thought about it or how much it hurt to give it a listen, I would seek out the positives. Well, you can imagine how mentally painful that would be, even for the mentally impaired like me.
At the end of the day, neither of those ideas seemed to work very well. They wouldn’t promote diversity, or reality, so I just scrapped the idea of doing reviews altogether. The thing is though, whether you do reviews or not, when you run an active website, people still send music and assume you do. So after more thought I had an epiphany. What if I take one, single song from an artist and send it to several of my friends and have them review that song; one song, several reviews? To prevent any prejudice or distractions from the song, I send the song with no title information, no artist information, no anything, just the song. They play the song and write the first thing that comes to their mind whether good, bad, sarcastic or downright wretched! It's about honest and diverse opinions; random people hearing random songs. Besides, I figured with different people reviewing the same random song, we should indeed get some interesting opinions and diverse reviews.
So now, this is The Music Room and they are The Listeners. I want to stress though, that this is meant to basically be a column. This isn’t about telling you that you should or shouldn’t listen to the bands or artists. This isn’t about an artist being good or bad. This is just a few Listeners hearing a song and saying what they feel. It could be a style of music they don’t like. It could be a style they do. I will also post all the information you need to find out how you feel about these artists and songs for yourself at the bottom of this page.
BTW, I also decided to add yet another element for the artist that are interested in doing so. I'm going to allow the artist a chance to review The Listeners! What? Yup, you heard it right, the artist reviews the reviewer, or in this case, The Listener! This won't ALWAYS happen, of course, but for those that choose to do so, they will have that outlet for revenge!
If you would like one of your songs reviewed here in The Music Room, or if you would like to be an anonymous Listener, check out the contact info at the bottom of the page.
