Kid Lightning

  Here's a wonder-kid I met at Rocklahoma 08.  The first artist to perform on any stage at the 5 day Pryor, Oklahoma festival was a kid that had just three months earlier turned 13 years old.  He went by the name of Kid Lightning and he started with the National Anthem on the Tri-Label Sidestage somewhere around 2:30 on Day 1. Normally the lead guitarist in the band Legacy Uprising, Kid Lightning (AKA Joey Doherty), played a 30 minute set without his Legacy Uprising band mates and without anything else but his guitar, a mic, and a bunch of amps. He would simply introduce the song, talk to the crowd  and shred the guitar strings that were underneath his finger tips.

 

   So for that simple fact Kid Lightning is definitely welcome in the Tribe. And with that being said, here's an email interview I recently did with him to give you all some more insight into this kids head and lifestyle.

 

   Some quick notes on the rest of members of the Myrtle Beach band Legacy Uprising.

 

   They recently parted ways with their singer and are in the process of finding a new one, but the rest of the band (btw they are adults) are rhythm guitarist Mike Blosser, bassist Shawn Bruce ( also plays with Circles in Autumn ) and drummer Wayne Martin. Mike and Joey have been playing together for 2 years now and Legacy Uprising manager Joe Doherty credits Mike for playing a big role in Joey's style.

 

   So, without further ado......Ladies and Gentlemen.... Here's Kid Lightning.

SplatterTribe: Introduce and compare yourself to a song by somebody else.

 

Kid Lightning: Joey Doherty some fans call me Kid Lightning because I play so fast. (I'd compare myself to) Anthem by "Trivium".
 

 

 

SplatterTribe: Ok, at what age did you start playing guitar and what's the story behind how and why you started playing?

Kid Lightning: started at 10 yrs old got it for my birthday. Always wanted to help people with my music.

 

(Tribe Note: Help People? You mean like help adult guitar players get depressed about how bad they suck?)

 

 

 

SplatterTribe: How many guitars do you have and what kind of equipment do you play on?
 

Kid Lightning:

8 guitars

1 Ibanez acoustic

3 Ibanez electric ( H.R Giger Limited Edition ) One S and one SX )

2 Dean Dimebag edition ( 1 explosion ) 1 custom Dime flying v )

1 ESP Dan Jacobs sig and

1 custom Fender Strat.

 

(Tribe Note: When I was your age I had a cheap Sears guitar with a built in amp!)
 

 

 

SplatterTribe: How often do you play your guitar on any given day?
 

Kid Lightning: 2 to 3 hours everyday....I get crazy when I don't play...lol
 

 

 

SplatterTribe: Toys, action figures, do you or did you ever collect or play with them?
 

Kid Lightning: Bionicle sets are pretty cool .... I like making things.
 

 

 

Kid Lightning: I don't know if he's holding the guitar or if the guitar is holding him, but either way I bet he's shredding it.

SplatterTribe: What's it like being your age, traveling and playing all over the States? Do you realize most kids your age are going to school, playing Nintendo DS and watching cartoon network?
 

Kid Lightning: It's fun to travel to new places meeting new fans and other cool bands. I still play video games and stuff as well but I realize I'm different then most kids. Most kids my age wear Hollister or Abercrombie & Fitch while I'm wearing Divine Heresy, Cannibal Corpse or Lamb Of God shirts...my dad took away my Goatwhore shirt. I'm still juggling school but I have a fan base at school. Everyone except the school cop who busted me for wearing a Slipknot shirt ...he said it was gang related. (pretty stupid huh!).

 

(Tribe Note: Hollister and Abercrombie & Fitch?  I've never heard of those bands? Are they Metal Bands? Hmmmmmm? BTW, I agree with your dad, on taking the Goatwhore shirt away, as a matter of fact, you shouldn't even be typing Goatwhore! Go To Bed!!!!)

 

 


SplatterTribe: Do you watch much TV and if so what do you like watching if and when you watch it?

 

Kid Lightning: I like watching Ghost Hunters and Supernatural Cartoons I like "My gym partner is a monkey " I watch TV when I have time to.....practice or studio or shooting videos or traveling to shows makes my schedule crazy.

 

(Tribe Note: Ghost Hunters is pretty awesome & my gym partner did used to be a monkey.....So......)

 

 

 

SplatterTribe: How many original songs do you think you have written? How many can you still play in their entirety?
 

Kid Lightning: I have written about 30 but I play 8 all the time .I come up with new stuff all the time ..just some things pop into my head and I put those ideas into songs....got some awesome new stuff.

 

 

 

SplatterTribe: Do you ever have any kind of stage fright at all?
 

Kid Lightning: Nope never ....I don't get nervous because being nervous is for people who doubt themselves I have no doubts in my abilities .I do get anxious to play every time.

 

 

 

SplatterTribe: If you were going to start the Kid Lightning Music Hall of Fame, who would be your first five nominees?

 

Kid Lightning: Eric Clapton, Dino Cazares, Yngwie Malsteem, Jimmy Page, and Dime 

Kid Lightning and Mike of BlastZone Entertainment: Joey, be careful, if I didn't know better I'd say that is a shaker full of seasoning he's hiding in his left hand and you're just about the right size!

 

 

 

SplatterTribe: Can you make a sentence out of these 5 words?
 

Splatter
Lightning
Brick
Pencil
Pumpkin


Kid Lightning: The lightning splattered the pumpkin on the brick and melted my pencil.....(very weird...lol)
 

(Tribe Note: What's so weird about that. I had that happen just the other day)

 

 

 

SplatterTribe: Do you get into any other styles of music besides METAL?
 

Kid Lightning: Yes rock, country, pop, r & B , I play metal because it's the hardest thing to play ...it challenges me...plus sounds cool.

SplatterTribe: The next question is a 5th grade science question so we can find out if you truly are........SMARTER THAN A 5th GRADER! but being that you are not far away from being an actual 5th grader and the fact that you spend your time around shady metalheads, I'm a little concerned about your education. So therefore I'm gonna ask you 2 questions.....


Geologists learn what organisms were like in the past by studying —
A- minerals
B- water
C- fossils
D- atmosphere

 

A person will see a flash of lightning before they hear the thunder that goes with it because —


A- the eye is quicker than the ear
B- the thunder occurs much later than the
lightning
C- sound travels faster through the
atmosphere than light
D- light travels faster through the
atmosphere than sound

 

Kid Lightning: fossils / (D) Light travels faster then sound.

 

(Tribe Note: Well, both those answers were right. So, I guess you can now move on to the 6th grade. I mean I'll have to check with your teachers, but you have my approval.)
 

 


SplatterTribe: Ok, time to test your song writing abilities. I'm gonna throw out the first 2 lines to and opening verse, I want you to write the next 2.

I saw the clouds forming

SplatterTribe: Any closing comments concerning anything else that I haven't touched on?

 

Kid Lightning: Being on stage is exhilarating.... and time fly's by onstage ..I just love playing guitar.....I'm working on vocals and I have been asked to join many other projects that I may take on. Legacy Uprising is actually my second band my first was "Shocker" ....there's a couple of older videos of me on YouTube I play either solo or with my band or other groups as well ...as long as I can play....I have a new cd coming out called Legacy Uprising 'United we Bleed' please check out the bands MySpace www.Myspace.com/LegacyUprising. I will be playing at Rocklahoma 2009, Thunder of the Gods Festival, Rock Gone Wild and also going to Europe for a tour and as always praying on performing at Ozzfest. Last thing any kids out there who wanna play guitar just do it.....it's all worth it.
